The Ancestral Glow
Decoding the 300-Year-Old Secrets of East Asian Beauty standard
Our doors are not yet open, but we are meticulously preparing for the grand reveal.
Stay tuned for the upcoming exhibition.
The Ancestral Glow explores the hidden blueprints of East Asian aesthetics through the masterpieces of the 18th century. Often perceived as a single cultural monolith from a Western perspective, the visual languages of Korea, China, and Japan are, in fact, distinct systems of philosophy, power, and commercial design.
Curated by digital curator Juna Jung, this exhibition traces the lineage of beauty from the silk canvases of the 1700s to the digital screens of today. By focusing on three legendary masters, Shin Yun-bok, the Court Painters of Emperor Yongzheng, and Kitagawa Utamaro, we decipher how their strokes established the “Visual DNA” that still defines the modern icons we admire today.
The exhibition is structured around three core aesthetic formulas:
Joseon’s Poetic Realism: Discover how Shin Yun-bok utilized “Yeobaek” (the beauty of emptiness) and delicate S-curves to capture inner dignity and a refined naturalism that lives on in today’s “clean-girl” aesthetics.
Qing’s Imperial Grandeur: Witness the maximalism of the Qing Dynasty court, where beauty was a display of imperial authority. Every intricate detail and luxurious ornament served as a visual statement of power and status.
Edo’s Graphic Aura: Step into the world of Kitagawa Utamaro, where beauty became a commercial icon. Explore the birth of fandom culture through bold lines and “Graphic Masks” that prioritized unforgettable character over perfect symmetry.
As the third digital project presented by Artistry Community, this exhibition invites you to look beyond the surface of a “pretty face.” It is an invitation to see the geometry of history and the cultural strategies that continue to shape our definition of the ideal.
Through this journey, we hope visitors will recognize that beauty is never accidental, it is a carefully designed legacy. We invite you to reflect on which visual DNA resonates with your own sense of identity and grace.
